Dear Mrs. Evertz, why did you choose to run a bookshop?

Because at home there was no more room to store books, and because I wanted to be as close as possible to everything that goes on between book covers. Also, it would be such a pleasure to learn daily about what’s new in publishing and sharing the news with others.

Please describe the final few meters of the route you take in the mornings to your bookshop.

My heart misses a beat with happiness every time I realise that my workplace is just here.

Throughout the day ...When the shop-door opens and someone steps inside...

Delight at seeing familiar faces again and at getting to know new customers. It is so lovely to see people leave the shop with smiling faces.

What is the wonderful thing that happens when we read?

It is enriching to be made to cross your own boundaries, and to become enlightened and sustained by new experiences and knowledge.

Many say they don’t have the time to read. What can they do about that?

Read everywhere. Seriously: finding the time to read is your decision. You can read to calm down, as a leisure activity, to relax, for contentment.

Has a Norwegian book given you a reading experience that you remember with pleasure?

Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder (transl. Paulette Møller, Orion Children's Books, new edition, 2000). It’s unforgettable – I read it in one go in 1993 when I was ill in bed.

Does Siri Hustvedt count as a Norwegian writer? What I loved made such an impression on me, one of my most profound reading experiences.

When I was a child I loved the book by ‘Berte Bratt’ alias Annik Saxegaard.

Translated from the German by Anna Paterson
