Petter Dass and Alstahaug

The parson poet Petter Dass (1647-1707) lived and worked at Alstahaug from 1689 until his death. His name is therefore strongly connected with the place.

Petter Dass holds a significant position in our cultural history. Through his distinctive writings, bearing the stamp of North Norway’s natural and human environment, Petter Dass is considered as one of the most important poets of the Dano-Norwegian realm of his time. Some of Petter Dass’ works have been translated to both English and German. Read Die Trompete des Nordlandes (German) online: https://urn.nb.no/URN:NBN:no-nb_digibok_2009071412003

The Petter Dass Museum

A new and modern museum, an 18th century parsonage and a beautiful medieval church: The Petter Dass Museum is a place of contrast.

The museum primarily tells the story of the parson poet Petter Dass, and of his many-faceted role in Norway’s cultural history.

The museum comprises a yard surrounded by historical buildings, and a new building open all year round, designed by famous architectural practice Snøhetta AS.
