Infrastructure of Feeling will be reading and curating Edvard Munch’s work at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

"Infrastructure of Feeling" is an audio/visual system developed by Paul Purgas & Louis Moreno that explores how our experience of art and understanding of culture is increasingly shaped by technologies like Machine Learning and AI. For the Frankfurt Book Fair, a specialised version of Infrastructure of Feeling has been commissioned to specifically engage with Edvard Munch’s written work.

The system uses a machine learning algorithm to analyse the emotions expressed in selections from the archive of Munch’s journals and notebooks. Having read Munch’s writing, the system analyses the text for emotional content and based on the outcome of the analysis will select a painting and piece of Norwegian music which best expresses the sentiment evoked. Visitors are able to follow this process across three screens which display the text the system is reading, together with the algorithmic analysis, and the machine's curatorial selections of image and song. The emotional state of the system is signalled through projected coloured light.

Infrastructure of Feeling will be reading and curating Edvard Munch’s work for the duration of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
