Visit Thon Hotels at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the foyer of the Norwegian Guest of Honour Pavilion in the Forum, Level 1, and let them advise you on the most beautiful destinations in Norway.
No-one will leave Norway’s capital hungry – as described in Knut Hamsun’s famous novel in 1890.
More than a century after “Hungry” was published, Oslo is now a popular culinary destination booming with trendy new restaurants, bars, coffee shops and food trucks. The range is great – from Michelin-starred Maaemo to informal foodstands at Oslo Street Food.
And Oslo’s best breakfast is served at Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz Oslo. The hotel is the county winner in the annual Twinings Best Breakfast Awards and is one of Oslo’s highest ranking hotels on Tripadvisor. The breakfast is included in the price for guests staying at the hotel.
“We also have locals who stop by to enjoy our prize-winning breakfast. Some of our most popular dishes is our smoked salmon marinated in beetroot and homemade liver pâté with thyme,” says general manager, Christian Arnet.
The hotel restaurant, Paleo, serves dishes with local specialties such as king crab, monkfish and Norwegian fine cheeses. Paleo is even mentioned in the Michelin guide: “With a name which reflects its philosophy, and a contemporary urban style, this is not your typical hotel restaurant. Watch the chefs prepare attractive modern Scandinavian dishes in the open kitchen.”
Their northern sister restaurant, Paleo Arctic, is located at Thon Hotel Lofoten in Svolvaer. They have previously won the Twinings award for Norway’s Best Breakfast. The hotel has a breathtaking view of the ocean and the Lofoten islands. After eating a fantastic breakfast guests can go directly from the hotel to rent kayaks, go on rib safaris or walk to the nearest mountain tops.
“One of my favorite hikes is to the mountain, Ryten, in the western part of Lofoten, with a beautiful view to the remote beach Kvalvika. Other popular hikes among tourists are the stairs up to Reinebringen with the iconic view above Reine, Festvaagtind close to the charming village Henningsvaer and to The Devil’s gate that is located in Svolvaer. Close to Svolvaer there are several trails in walking distance from the hotel, all with spectacular views,” says Kari Andreassen, who works at Thon Hotel Lofoten.
In June visitors also come to attend “Reine Ord” which is called “The world’s most beautiful literature festival”. Authors such as Maja Lunde, Dag Solstad, Anne B. Ragde and Carsten Jensen have attended the festival which is held in the Summer at the fiskevær Reine.
Thon Hotels has more than 70 hotels in Norway. One of the most exotic locations for tourists is Thon Hotel Kautokeino in Finnmark which is up North and close to the Finnish border.
“I recommend Kautokeino as a destination for both Norwegian and foreigners. Thon Hotel Kautokeino is one of our special hotels. It is situated on the Finnmarksvidda arctic plateau with fantastic opportunities for fishing, hiking and a great place for reading a good book and enjoying the peacefulness”, says CEO of Thon Hotels, Morten Thorvaldsen.
Thorvaldsen started out in the hotel business for more than 40 years ago, working at the iconic Hotel Bristol in Oslo. Bristol is a part of the Thon Hotels chain and is well-known for their Afternoon tea, homemade bread and exquisite pastry. One of the main attractions at Hotel Bristol is the Library Bar which has an unique atmosphere and interior bringing you back to the 1920’s.
